The weather can be unpredictable, and sometimes it can really throw a wrench in our plans for outdoor activities. But just because it's raining, snowing, or too hot to go outside doesn't mean we have to give up on our fitness goals. With these tips and strategies for staying active indoors, you can keep moving and stay on track no matter what the weather is like outside.
Tip 1: Dance It Out
Dancing is a great way to get your heart rate up and burn some calories while having fun. You can create your own dance routine to your favorite songs or follow along with online dance classes. If you have kids or pets, they can join in on the fun too. Turn up the music and let loose!
Tip 2: Circuit Training
Circuit training is a form of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) that involves performing a series of exercises in a specific order with little to no rest in between. You can create your own circuit workout by choosing 4-5 exercises and performing each one for 30 seconds to a minute before moving on to the next. Examples of exercises to include in your circuit are squats, lunges, push-ups, burpees, and planks.
Tip 3: Yoga and Pilates
Yoga and Pilates are low-impact exercises that can be done indoors with little to no equipment. They are great for improving flexibility, balance, and strength. There are plenty of online yoga and Pilates classes that you can follow along with or you can create your own routine using YouTube videos or apps.
Tip 4: Chair Exercises
If you have limited mobility or prefer exercises that are easier on the joints, chair exercises are a great option. You can do arm curls, leg raises, and other exercises while sitting in a chair. These exercises can be modified to increase or decrease intensity depending on your fitness level.
Tip 5: Play Active Games
Games can be a fun way to get moving indoors. Try playing games like Twister, charades, or scavenger hunts that involve physical activity. You can also invest in active gaming systems like the Nintendo Wii or Xbox Kinect that have games that involve physical movement.
Tip 6: Exercise Apps
There are a plethora of exercise apps available that can help you stay active indoors. Many of these apps have workouts that require little to no equipment and can be done in a small space. Some popular options include Nike Training Club, 7 Minute Workout, and FitOn. Don’t forget about your Daily Activities in the Optimity app!
Tip 7: Interval Walking
If you're someone who enjoys walking outdoors, bad weather can be especially frustrating. But did you know you can still get your steps in indoors? Interval walking is a great way to get your heart rate up and burn calories. Simply walk briskly for a few minutes, then slow down for a few minutes to catch your breath before repeating the cycle.
No matter what the weather is like outside, there are plenty of ways to stay active indoors. From dancing to circuit training, chair exercises to yoga, and everything in between, there's something for everyone. Try out a few of these tips and strategies to find what works best for you and keep moving toward your health and wellness goals.
