Profile: Laura McGee

Tell us about yourself.

I am the founder and CEO of Diversio, a SaaS company that uses artificial intelligence to help organizations and investors become more inclusive. Outside of work, I’m on the Canadian Global Citizen Board and an Advisor to ArcTern Ventures, a cleantech venture capital firm. I have a real passion for making the world a better place for both people + planet, and feel very lucky to have a few different platforms to do so.

What do you consider as your biggest achievement?

I am deeply proud of my team’s work at Diversio and would consider it to be my greatest achievement. Our tech team and relationship managers are driving real changes at the employee-level of organizations, and we see the impact through our clients’ results.

What advice would you give to your 18-year-old self?

Look at failure and rejection as character-building and learning opportunities. Don’t let fear get in the way of risk-taking, especially if mostly afraid of getting your ego bruised.

How do you stay productive and be your best self at work?

• Take your work seriously but don’t take yourself seriously. Our team laughs a lot and we find a good sense of humour gets you through most challenges

• I keep a running list of my top 3 priorities on a Word document that I update every morning. I check this several times a day to ensure I’m working on the most important projects

• Delegate! I’m a big fan of the rule “touch it once” (in other words, if you open an email, answer it right away or immediately pass it off)

What's your top mental health tip for when the going gets tough?

Same as above: having a sense of humour and a good laugh with your team as often as possible.

What are your top health hacks?

Make it a top priority and eliminate the guilt of scheduling meetings and deadlines around your mental and physical health.

What's your favorite fun activity?

Rollerblading! (Even though I’ve taken a few falls)

Who are your female role models and why?

Annette Verschuren and Elyse Allen, two CEOs I had the pleasure to work with when they served on the Canada-US Council for Advancement of Women. They are not only incredibly effective and empathetic leaders, they are deeply committed to advancing gender and all kinds of diversity.

This month, we’re sharing inspiring women's stories. Who inspires you? Leave their name and social media link in the comments below!
